On My Honor

On my honor, I will try
To serve God and my country
To help people at all times
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
The Girl Scout Promise

From Veterean’s Day 2009

In case you missed it, today is Veteran’s Day; a day to honor those who have served this country with honor and valor. This is a day to be thankful for all of the freedoms we enjoy, freedoms which are protected by those men and women who have served in our Armed Forces.

My dad was veteran. This is actually a really funny statement. If you’d met my dad, you’d understand that there was not a more peaceable guy around. In fact his father and uncles had been conscientious objectors. It was sort of an act of defiance that he went to Vietnam and served in the Army.

He painted helicopters. I’ll tell you about the time he took a little cash from the pilots to paint over the company seal which was a big, red cross painted on the belly of the helicopter. Oh, wait I just told you. Never mind.

In honor of Veteran’s Day, my troop organized a cookie-and-card making service project for the Girl Scouts in our community. Then we invited ourselves to hand out the cookies at the Greenburgh Veteran’s Day ceremony. It was really lovely, and I was so proud of my girls. They really have become such poised, well-spoken, caring young women. OK, I’ll stop now before I embarrass them. I’ll let the Photos tell the story. But first I’ll say “Thank you” to all of our veterans. You are loved and appreciated for all you have done to serve our country.

This is Liza. She appreciates you too.
