Cookie Craziness Continued – and a GIVEAWAY!

Posted by Missy on December 15, 2009 in CONTEST, Cookery |

So one of my favorite kinds of cookies to make is a recipe called Uncle Bob’s Sugar Cookies. They’re super easy and sinfully delicious, managing to be both light and rich at the same time. Served with a cup of coffee (or a glass of milk for you health nuts out there) they are, in a word, divine.

I was a little sad when no one voted for these pillowy parcels of perfection, and I knew I’d be making them anyway. So I snapped some photos for practice and got an idea. I’d bought these gift boxes and had an extra. And what do you know, a dozen fresh Uncle Bob’s Sugar Cookies fit right in it! And it was all packed up and ready to go. So I figured I’d have a giveaway!

Need a dozen cookies for a cookie swap? A swell hostess gift? A mess of cookies your husband/wife/kids don’t know about? This box could have your name all over it!

The rules are simple: Leave a comment on the blog and tell me your favorite holiday treat. Latkes? Eggnog? Plain ol’ chocolate chip cookies? Tell me what you love to have at this time of year and I’ll select one winner at random from the comments. Contest ends at 9:00 pm. Eastern time on Wednesday. Hurry and leave your comment!

In the meantime, let me tell you how to make these cookies. You’ll thank me.

Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
1 cup confectioner’s sugar
1 cup butter
1 cup oil
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
4 cups + 2 Tbls flour (added gradually)

Cream the butter and sugars well. Add oil, eggs, vanilla and blend, add dry ingredients, mixing well to combine after each addition.

Roll into 1 inch balls. (Or use the handy-dandy cookie scooper your husband bought you a couple weeks ago in the hopes you’d make him more cookies.) Place about 1 ½ inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Slightly squash the balls of dough with the bottom of a glass dipped in colored sugar. White sugar works fine, too.

And for some reason a giveaway Coke glass works best for this application.

Bake in a 375* oven for 8-10 minutes. Yields approximately 40 cookies if you make big balls. (Hee hee! I crack me up.) More like 48 if you use a standard cookie scooper. Cool on a flat surface and try not to eat them right out of the oven, they’re hot!

Oh, dear. It's so hard to narrow down to one favorite holiday treat…I'll go with these cherry cookies my mom makes. They're like little cups of goodness…with a cherry in the middle. Delicious. I really need to get that recipe.

(you know, since I've never commented on your blog before- I have to admit, the possibility of yummy-looking cookies drew me in. Now you're bookmarked.)

My absolute favorite holiday treat is Christmas nougats, those little chewy peppermint candies with the little tree on them. Best. Candy. Ever. As for homemade treats, I'd probably have to go with ginger creams. They're a soft ginger cookie with a creamy frosting. I'm making them for the cookie exchange at work.

I really love eating my sugar free lemon bars baked specially for me by the very talented and very fetching Missy Carvin.

MMMMMMMM… I love Kringle and chex mix. I know I can make chex mix other times of the year but I don't. The secret to super yummy chex mix is honey nut cheerios, they caramelize so nicely an excellent sweet to the salt. Of course decorated sugar cookies are a strong favorite. This post is making me hungry!

Also I really need to win; I am knee deep in database consolidation and go live so I have no energy or time for baking … my poor family!

Oh my you're killin' me with all these cookies! Though I'm going to attempt Uncle Bob's recipe this weekend… so my favorite Christmas treats… because there's noooo way I could choose one… Eggnog blended with crushed ice (the ice texture is critical for optimum yumminess) and Brandy or Myer's and sprinkled with nutmeg… my grandmother's zucchini bread and of course my Christmas Eve fav… strawberries, apples and pineapple with chocolate fondue… ok – now I'm drooling!! Hope you have a fabulous holiday! =) – Tania

I have a fave that just came into my life a few years ago…and I only allow myself to make it at the holidays since it's SO good and I'll eat so much! We call it holiday bark and it's based on saltine crackers, of all things, all hardened with melted butter and brown sugar and then coated in dark chocolate and nuts. YUM! I am going to make them when we get home from Russia!!!! I also love my Mom's Chex Mix – we only make it this time of year. Oh, and my dilled Cheez Its. Oh, and sausage balls. Oh, and eggnog. Crum, now I'm hungry! Holly

Our tradition is (or was since she's now passed) my aunt's "blonde brownies". They use to be everyone's favorite dessert (mine included) at Christmas time and I will definitely miss them.

in my family, our traditional christmas cookie is called "buckeye balls" which, really isn't a cookie at all. it's more of a ball of peanut butter with some stuff mixed in, dipped in melted chocolate and allowed to cool and harden.

my actual favorite is those peanut butter cookies with peanut butter cups smooshed into the top of them. hershey kisses can also be used. the house smells absolutely delightful with all these cookies baking and cooling!

since the holidays is the only time of year i'm really into desserts (even though i gave up dessert after dinner for 2009), i plan on indulging a little bit. or at least, in the new year!

I am a big fan of the green Christmas tree Spritz cookies. It just doesn't feel like Christmas without them!
