My Shapoopie

Posted by Missy on February 5, 2010 in Uncategorized |

As if there was ANY doubt left in ANYONE’S mind that Abby is my clone (albeit with a better tan), she has begun venturing further into my world this week with the introduction of… BROADWAY MUSICALS! After I started humming “Shapoopie” from The Music Man, Abby asked what I was humming. (Shapoopie is her new favorite word, by the way.) I told her it was from a play and that I had a copy of the movie on DVD, did she want to watch it?

She did, so we settled in on the couch, started up good old Meredith Willson, and Abby was entranced. She now goes around bleating “Whaddya talk? Whaddya talk? Whaddya talk?” and cracking up in laughter. She also will randomly run into a room, yell “SHAPOOPIE!!!” and run out again, laughing all the way.

The next day, we started The King and I,starring Yul Brenner’s chest. She loved the little kids, but kept wandering in and out of the room. I can’t wait until we get to the big “Shall We Dance” number. I have a feeling that the song will become part of our repertoire pretty soon.

As excited as I am about this turn of events, I’m running out of musicals! I’ve only got a few DVDs of the great musicals. I already told you that I have The Music Man and The King and I, but I don’t know that she’s quite ready for West Side Story yet. (Or Jesus Christ Superstar. And let’s not even talk about Rent just now.) Sadly, this list completes my inventory of musicals, a fact that brings me great shame and sorrow (I was a theatre major, after all).

Abby’s birthday is coming up in a couple weeks and I think it would be fun to get her a few more discs we can watch together. Not that I have anything against The Little Mermaid, but Rita Moreno just does it for me a little more than Ariel. We discussed Godspell, Oklahoma, South Pacific (if only for “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught” a.k.a the Make Mommy Cry Song), Annie, Sound of Music, and Once Upon a Mattress. But I know there are so many more that she’d love!

So I need some help. What musicals should I go procure? What’s YOUR all-time favorite? Leave your response in the comments!

I can hardly wait to hear all these fun songs from our Abby. One of my favorites is Sound of Music. There are so many great ones which I am sure you are more familiar that I. Love you all.

I LOVE broadway! My favorite is The Sound of Music. Cinderella is a good one for music, and the one starring Brandy features multiracial families. 7 Brides for 7 Brothers has good dance scenes but there is a scene where they kidnap all the girls in the town that might be scary (but turns out happy in the end of course). Guys and Dolls, Annie, Singin’ in the Rain, Fiddler on the Roof…

Other non-broadway (I think) musicals I love are Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, even Enchanted which is current (but some of the elderly dancers in the park are from earlier musicals such as Mary Poppins).

You have to get “Singin’ in the Rain!” Trying to remember all the ones that I loved as a kid, there were so many great Disney ones when we were little. “Summer Magic” and “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band” made my world when I was young.
