Happy Birthday, My Heart

Today you are three years old. You have the face and body of a real kid. Except for the tiny bit of delicious thunder thigh you still have going on. You are officially no longer a baby, although you’ve insisted on being called a “big girl” for months now.

You go to school. You know your shapes and are learning your colors. You have some amazing visual literacy and are able to pick out a Disney logo at 100 paces. You love to play games and your favorite thing is pretending to be a character from a movie. The movie and the character are subject to change on a whim.

You sing songs to me all the time. Sometimes they’re songs I recognize, other times you make them up out of thin air. You get frustrated when I don’t know the song you’re singing and you get mad if I guess wrong. You just got a set of play musical instruments and you’ve made joyful noise with them. You love to listen to songs on my iPhone and ask for the “Abby Mix” daily.

You have your mommy’s temper and your daddy’s wry sense of humor. You try to use sarcasm but are surprised when it works against you. You tell the funniest jokes and are an amazing mimic. Your mimicry sometimes gets you in trouble when you try to talk like the grown-ups, but usually we all laugh and talk about kid words and grown-up words.

You are the most determined little thing and it usually only takes you a try or two to learn a new skill. We’re working on asking for help if things are hard, but so few things are hard for you. You love to pick out your clothes and put on your pajamas. You’d change outfits 12 times a day if we’d let you.

You light up every day for me. Even when you’re in a crabby-Abby mood and nothing seems to be going right for you, I am still happy to be your mommy. On the weekends you prefer to fall asleep in my arms for your nap and I love being cuddled close with you, breathing in the way you smell. I don’t love knowing that you won’t want to do this forever.

I love you more and more every day. Every time I think I couldn’t possibly love you more, you do something amazing and wonderful and so very “ABBY” that my heart grows a little bit more. You are my babygirl, even if you don’t like me to call you that. And I am so blessed to be forever and always your mommy.

I love you, babygirl. Happy birthday!!

Love, Mommy
